File Courtney's final income tax return

This is income tax paid by the estate, and is unrelated to federal or state estate taxes.

A personal tax return will need to be filed for Courtney, using the standard Form 1040, before the April 15th deadline (or request an extension). Surviving spouses who regularly filed jointly can file a joint return, including your loved one's income on that return.

If Courtney ends up owing any taxes, these will come out of the remaining assets in the estate. Any refund will be paid to the estate.

Sometimes an estate can continue to earn money after the person passes away. If the estate itself generates adjusted gross income over $600, you will need to file Form 1041 as well.
